VDRL (syphilis) is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacteria Treponema pallidum. The syphilis infection is spread through contact with a syphilitic sore. It is also called a chancre. This usually happens during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. The test is most often done using a blood sample.
